Reception Daily Phonics: Tuesday

The phonic sounds we are going to practice in the next few weeks,  are spelled in many different ways in English. For example, the ‘or’ sound is spelled differently in these words; bought, taught, saw, sure, fault, door, more.  Children will encounter these different spellings when reading books.

In Phonics however, we are focussing on reading and writing using these phonemes; ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure and er.

This is because this helps early writers to sound out, read and write words and simple sentences in ways which match their spoken sounds, without support from an adult, which is the goal for the end of Reception Class. We aim for all children to become ‘phonetically fearless’ and to enjoy their reading and writing. The ‘correct’ spellings come later, when the child is a more confident writer. Therefore, please don’t correct spellings if the way that they are written matches the phonic sound that they have learned and can be read by your child and others.      Many thanks for your support in this.

Well done for your hard work in Phonics yesterday.

Today, we are going to practice the digraph ‘ur’. A diagraph means two letters together which make one sound.

Practice saying the sound ‘ur’ and making the ‘ur’ action.

Can you sound out and read these words?

Can you sound out and write these words by yourself?

Can you write a sentence by yourself about one of the pictures?

Challenge: Can you think of any more words with the ‘ur’ sound and write them by yourself?
