Good morning Class 4!
As you know, our new topic for Religious Education is Pentecost with a focus on ‘serving’.
For printable versions of the resources please click here: ReligiousEducationTask.
First we need to understand what is meant by ‘Pentecost’.
What is it and what does it mean?
Pentecost is a Greek word meaning ‘the fiftieth Day’. At this feast the Jewish people celebrate Shavuot, the Festival of Weeks. It celebrates the giving of the Torah, that is the first five books of the Bible, at Mount Sinai. In Jesus’ day it would have been a time when there were a lot of people in Jerusalem. This was the time of year when the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles and Mary. This is described in Chapter 2 of the Acts of the Apostles.
For further explanation look at this clip below which explains the Pentecost clearly.
You MUST ask an adult before clicking this link.

Your Task:
Make sure you fully understand what happened on the day of the Pentecost before doing this task. If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask me on this blog!
Look at the images below (you can click on them to make them bigger). They are all images where a artists have depicted the Pentecost in different ways.
Think about what the image is showing and how it is showing the important aspects of the Pentecost.
For each image, write a short explanation saying how the artist has shown the Pentecost through their art work. You might have to look carefully at different symbols within the paintings.

You can write your answers on the blog or if you prefer in your home learning book.
Challenge:
Which picture do you think shows the Pentecost best and why?
I think image 1 shows pentecost because everyone is in the church getting baptised and then Jesus send’s down the holy spirit and blesses his disciples to make them believe that Jesus is alive.
Some good ideas Ciana. All of the paintings show the Pentecost in different ways. Can you explain how the other images show the Pentecost?
In each painting the artist has shown light from above looking down to the people of God and they are all reaching out to touch the light apart from the last picture isn’t showing any people but still looks like light and reaching out. Picture two looks like the hands of God coming down to give his people the light
Great ideas Albert! What else can you see in the images that show they are telling us about the day of Pentecost?
I like image 2, because it looks like God is coming down to them and telling them not to be afraid
It is great that you like image 2! Can you explain how all of the images show the Pentecost?
Hello everyone, this is what I wrote;
Image 1 – The artist has shown an image of Pentecost in his painting by painting the disciples. He has also drawn the dove that came down from Heaven on top of their heads. I can see that the dove is shining a light and when I first saw that, I thought in my head ‘that is the light of Jesus.’
Image 2 – The artist has shown an image of Pentecost in his painting by drawing Jesus’ hands with the Holy Spirit on them. He has also painted fire that has come from the Holy Spirit onto the disciples heads. He has also put some blood on Jesus’ hands to show that Jesus has risen from the dead.
Image 3 – The artist has shown an image of Pentecost in his painting by painting the disciples looking at the Dove that has come down through the clouds from Heaven. I have also spotted two angels, who are well hidden by two clouds. When I first spotted that, I thought of Easter, when Jesus rose from the dead.
Image 4 – The artist has shown an image of Pentecost in his painting by roughly drawing the outline of the disciples with a faintly. There is also a lot of fire on both the disciples heads and in the back round. I also spotted that there was no Holy Spirit in the picture, unlike the others.
I have also drawn and painted a picture of Pentecost.
Excellent work Sophie well done! You have clearly explained each of the images and how they represent the day of the Pentecost! I would love to see your picture, what a great idea! Can you send it to us and I can upload it to this blog for everyone to see?
In each painting it is show that artis has showing people getting flames on their head. Then they can all speak different languages
and then they can all understand eachother as they are talking in different languages some of them talk in the same language
Some good ideas Karter. What do the flames represent do you think?
In each image there is light and it also represents Jesus is the light, there is also a dove in 3 of the pictures and that represents the holy spirit.
Challenge:
I think image 2 shows Pentecost the most because the dove is there who represents the holy spirit and they have the fire over their heads.
Some good ideas Raimundo, how else do each of the pictures show the day of the Pentecost?
I think that image #2 shows Pentecost because it shows Jesus letting down the Holy Spirit. There are also people with all sorts of nationality which I think represents that the disciples could speak in every language at once after receiving the Holy Spirit.
Good explanation for image 2 Vincent! The task says to explain all of the images, can you have a go at the others?
In all the paintings there is light or fire. This is representing the Holy Spirit . It means Jesus is alive as he promised. The dove in 2 of the paintings is a symbol of life and the people are rejoiced to see that he kept his promise.
In each picture they have the Dove what repesents the Holy Spirit.
And God sent the Holy Spirit to shine down on us.
Image one and three show the holy spirit coming down to earth ?.
Image two and four show the holy flames on there heads.
My favourite one is number two because it shows all of the disciples flames coming together to form as one.
Hello Miss Lee?
I think image 1 is in the church and people getting baptised and they can see the Holy Spirit outside the window.
On image 2,it is about all the disciples having flames on their heads while Jesus’s hand is covered with blood.
On image 3 there is people in a dark place and there is the Holy Spirit is there and people are happy to see it.
On image 4 there is flames in the sky and people (disciples)has flames on their heads, too.
Thank you ?
I think image 1 shows the dove because it represents new life and the life of the world ? to come. And I also think ? the painter painted light and fire on the painting ? to represent Jesus the light of the world. I can see in the painting that the fire is spreading on top of the apostles’ head.
I think image 2 shows God’s hands reaching down to earth sending fire ? and warmth to the apostles. Also, sending a dove ? for meaning love ?.
I think image #2 is the best because…
the apostles are thanking God and waving their arms in mid air.
Why do you think this make image 2 the best?
IMAGE 1:
The artist ?? of this painting ? has included the light shining from a dove ?, which represents the Holy Spirit.
IMAGE 2:
This artist ?? has included the dove ? (the symbol of the Holy Spirit), the hands ?? of Jesus with the wounds from being crucified and the flames ? coming down on all people from different cultures, because the disciples started to speak different languages.
IMAGE 3:
In this piece of art ? there is a dove ? and small specks of flame ? coming down from the sky ?. There also is some angles ? lying on clouds ☁️.
IMAGE 4:
in image 4 I can see that there is a big fire ? coming from the top of the painting ?, and down below I can see the flames and can faintly see the disciples behind the flames almost as if they were their shadows.
Well done for writing detailed explanations for each of the images Lucy! Super work!
In the first image the Holy Spirit descends on the Disciples as a Dove full of light from the Heaven, to bless them. In the second image there are Jesus’ hands with the Dove on it, spreading the fire of the Holy Spirit. In the third painting there is a Dove in the Light with some angels, spreading small flames. The last image shows the Disciples inflamed by the big fire of the Holy Spirit above.
My favourite is the second because it has Jesus’ hands with the Dove, blessing them all.
Some good explanations Paolo well done. Yes in art work the Holy Spirit is sometimes represented as a dove but it is important to remember that the Holy Spirit is not actually a dove.
Well done for noticing it is Jesus’ hands in the second image, how can you tell this?
Miss Lee,
Of course, I will post it to you now and you will hopefully get it by tomorrow.
I miss you a lot
Sophie
Great Sophie I can’t wait to see it! I am missing you all too! I hope we are back at school soon!

Dear Miss Lee I sent you the picture of my work
Fantastic, I will upload it onto this blog!
Good afternoon everyone ?
Here are my thoughts on each image:
Image 1 : The artist has shown the descend of the holy spirit in a form of a dove together with the rays of the sun upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ. I think it shows us that Jesus is the light that shines upon us.
Image 2 : In this image, the artist has shown the wounds of Jesus Christ on how he was crucified on the cross and resurrected. The dove represents the descend of the holy spirit with tongues of fire apon the apostles making them speak different languages that they haven’t learned.
Image 3 : The artist has shown Pentecost in this picture/painting of a white dove spreading its wings accompanied by angels. There is also a rain of fire which has landed on each of the apostles and Virgin Mary.
Imags 4 : This panting represents a huge flame of fire followed by a strong wind symbolises the presence of the holy spirit dwelling on each of the apostles.
Painting 1:
In this painting, the artist has painted some flames and fire. He/ she has also painted a dove to represent the Holy Spirit. On the painting I can also see mary.
Painting 2:
On this painting, the painter painted some fire and flames to represent the Holy Spirit. This is the same for the dove on the picture. In addition, the painter painted Jesus ´s hands wounded from when he was crusified on the cross .
Painting 3:
This painting has a dove and angels.
The angels are here to represent that this is from Jesus. The dove and the tiny flames are here to represent the Holy Spirit.
Painting 4:
On this painting , the painter painted shadows of the apostles. There is also raging fire in a shape of wind to represent the Holy Spirit .
