Good morning, Year 5,
Today we will be looking at human development from birth to five years old. Here is a handy timeline.
Humans, like all mammals, give birth to live young. The fertilised egg stays inside the female and develops in the womb. The baby is linked to the mother via a placenta which gives the baby nutrients and oxygen and takes away waste products.
The amount of time it takes for a baby to develop is called the gestation period. In humans this is roughly 9 months (266 days).
Smaller animals normally have a shorter gestation period than larger animals. For example, a mouse’s gestation period is around 20 days and an African elephant’s is 645 days!
Human babies are highly dependent on their parents for a long time after birth. They start to walk at around 1 year old and learn to talk at
about 18 months old. They grow rapidly. By the age of five a child can walk, talk and feed itself, but is still very dependent on its parents.
The human life span can be split into a number of stages:
infancy
childhood
adolescence
young adulthood
adulthood
and
old age.
The actual length of these stages varies across different cultures and time periods.
Today’s task:
Can you share a baby photo of yourself? If possible, share one via the Homework Uploader. You do not need to write your name on the photo. Don’t worry if you can’t share a photo – you can still take part in guessing who is who and responding to the questions below…
I wonder if the class can guess who is who?!
Here is a photo of me, Mrs Avdiu, as a baby:
I hope you would agree, I have changed a lot since then!
In the blog comments, please share with us:
What has happened to you as you have got older?
How have you changed since you were a baby?
How have you changed since you started school?
Challenge:
How does the life cycle of a human compare to that of
other animals?
Can you name some other animals (like us) that are highly dependent on their parents and other animals that aren’t?
Miss Coleman and Miss Carruthers will kindly respond to the blogs for today and I look forward to reading your comments on Friday!

Hello everyone these are my answers for the questions:
I have learnt more and I can do lots of stuff by myself also I still depend on my parents but not as much as I used to. I have changed since I was a baby because I have grown bigger and taller also my brain and my bones have developed more which makes me stronger and smarter also I can walk and talk. Yes because I have learned alote and also made some friends I have got a proper personality.
Challenge:
An animal that gives birth like a human are the Great Apes like a Chimpanzee because they are mammals, they look like humans because humans evolved from them, they give breast milk and have to stay with there parents for a while. I think another animal is puppies they are highly venerable and when they are born they can not do anything one more animal that depends on there parents alote is an eagle because they take a long time to grow and really need there parents to bring them food. Two animals hat do not need there parents as much as humans are a snake when they are born they usually just slither away in to the wild finding there own food by themselves and the other are fish most fish usually just swim of and try and find food an hide from sharks of other fish.
Good morning Claudia,
Well done for your thoughtful answers. I agree that you have become more independent-I have enjoyed watching you develop since you were in Nursery!
I have a new puppy and I agree that she is vulnerable-especially as she eats anything she can find that fits in her mouth!
Hi everyone! These are my answers:
* As I have grown older, I have become more mature and independent. I learned more things and I’m now smarter than I was when I was much younger.
* As I have grown from a baby to 10 years old, I am now much taller than when I was a baby. I look much more different from when I was very small too!
* From before I started school, all I did was either read or play and it wasn’t really entertaining. I don’t really remember a lot from when I was really little but I think that was all I did. But once I started school I was busier and I learnt more things. I made lots of friends and I got to play with them at school! I also love school more than just staying at home all day playing because I learn new things at school! We also do really fun activities 😀
Thank you for reading this and I hope you all have a nice day! Bye!
Kayla 😀
Hi Kayla,
Thank you for your answers. I am sure your parents and big sister found you entertaining before you started school, even if you cannot remember!
I love school too and look forward to seeing you soon.
Can you try the challenge and think about the difference between humans and animals?
Hello everybody!
What has happened to you as you have got older?
As I have gotten older my cells have performed mitosis.
Mitoses is when your cells multiply by splitting in half. When your cells multiply you get taller. This is where I got my information: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-ldPgEfAHI
How have you changed since you were a baby?
How I have changed since I was a baby is that I have become more independent. My parents don’t need to watch my every-move and they don’t need to tell me to do things as much. I also look different, i now have long strait hair but when I was a toddler, my hair was really curly.
How have you changed since you started school?
I have changed since I have started school because I am now smarter and better at socialising, I have friends and my own personality. At school I have become even more busier with work. When I was in nursery, all you did was play, playing is fun but learning is fun too.
Hello Ava,
Thank you for our responses and for sharing the additional research and source of your information.
I am pleased that you think learning is fun. I agree!
Why don’t you try the challenge and continue your learning?
Hello everyone, I hope that you are all enjoying your day so far. Here are my answers for the questions:
– As I have got older, I have become more intelligent and now have more ability to do things other than sit around and play with toys. I have more control over how I feel and what I do.
– I have changed in height and looks not just in how I act. I have also grown new physical features and have lost lots of my baby teeth and are growing new ones that are stronger and healthier.
– I have changed in personality and since I have started school, I have made lots of friends and have interacted with new people. It has made me a better person and I have learnt lots of new skills at school that will help in the future to get a job and earn money. It has helped me develop in lots of ways that will help me to grow to be a independent person.
Hi Elsa,
Thank you for answering the questions. As your headteacher, I really enjoy watching you all grow into more independent young people throughout your time at primary school.
Why don’t you try the challenge?
Hello everyone, hope you are well,
here are my answers:
As I have gotten older I have found that I can do things which I could not before for example now I am perfectly capable to make my own breakfast but when I was younger it would have been too tricky for me to do without assistance.
I have changed since I was a baby in many ways: I am more capable, I can eat solid food and many more things.
You also grow more mature and independent and you rely less on those around you.
As you get older you learn more things and become more aware of the things happening around you. Before children start school it is all fun and games and then they enter a work environment which can be difficult. I would say that my classmates and I have progressed a lot since starting school, in our journey towards independence. Everyone progresses at a different speed.
Challenge:
Mammals have more or less the same life cycles. A mammal is an animal that gets milk from its mother, has a backbone and fur or hair on its body, and is warm-blooded. Like humans there are animals which grow less reliant on their parents like monkeys for example. In their young age monkeys are highly dependent on their parents in order to survive and are taught survival skills by them as they grow, just as we are.
Hello Lavinia,
Thank you for your thoughtful responses to the questions and well done for trying the challenge. Monkeys are a good example as they have many similar characteristics to humans.
Hello everyone.
Since I was a baby I have changed physically and mentally. I have grown taller, stronger, have developed better balancing and movement skills. I can run faster, jump higher, swim and lots of other things. Since I started school, I have become more independent, have gained a lot of new skills like reading writing, counting, solving problems and many more. I am more aware of my surroundings and dangers so I can say I have grown mature.
Have a lovely day.
Maia?
Hello Maia,
Yes, growing in maturity is an important part of your development and you have definitely gained many new skills since starting school.
Why don’t you try the challenge?
Hi Class 5!
I’ve been looking at your baby photos, and so far I recognise….
Claudia, Lavinia, Maia, Possibly Olivia, and and possibly Iggy?
Hello everyone!! I hope that you have had a great day so far! For today’s science ? ? task, I have done all of the questions and I have also done the challenge. Have a look:
As I am getting older, my appearance is changing . Not only my appearance, but my heart and inside appearance also start to change. If you are wondering what this means, then I will answer that for you.
My inside appearance start to change and I handle things better then I used to. I have become more mature and trustworthy, people can trust me and I can keep secrets if needed. I stop ✋? gossips which makes people think ? that I have become a least 20 times more mature.
I have learned a ton of new skills and I have developed my talents. I can swim ?♀️, sing ?, dance ??, walk ??♀️, run ??♀️, talk ?, I can read ?, I can write ✏️, I can play different instruments ? ? and many other things.
As you can see I have become more independent and I don’t need my family’s help as much as I used to. I am also aware when I am in trouble or if there is danger around me.
Before I started school ? I was a bit less mature. In school I have become more confident (with the help of the amazing staff ?). School has always been one of my favourite places to be at.
I also have support from my mum, she is helping me become a stronger person.

CHALLENGE:
I have learned that life cycles of all animals have four stages:
~ Birth
~ Growth
~ Reproduction
~ Death ?
These stages are hugely different among species. Whilst mammals develop as embryos in their mothers womb, birds ?, reptiles ? and incests ?hatch from eggs.
Interesting ? fact :
Butterflies ? go through a drastic transformation during their growing stage and this process is called ‘Metamorphosis’.
Humans gestation period is about nine months ( that’s about 300 days).
It takes rabbits 33 days to go through the gestation period whilst it takes an Asian Elephant ? 645 days ( that’s about 2 years). This means, that the mammal size and group affect the gestation period.
Mammals (e.g. dogs, monkeys e.t.c) have similar life cycles as humans. A mammal is an animal that gets milk from its mother (like we do), has a backbone (and we do too) and fur or hair on its body (just like us). When humans are babies ?? we have less hair than when we grow up.
Monkeys ? are a great example to show how similar we are to them. Did you know that we share about 95% of our DNA ? with them!! Whilst monkeys are young, they mostly depend on their parents to get food ? for them. As they grow up, monkeys learn how to survive in the jungle and everywhere else.
I hope that you have learned something new!
Have a lovely day! ?
~ Nika ?
Hello everyone, Miss Coleman, Miss Carruthers,
This are my answers for the questions:
When I grow older, I got to have friends, know how to speak, to walk and to be more intelligent. So, at present time, I know a lot of things on my own as playing, running, dancing, drawing, sleeping and eating (and so on!).
When, I was small, my parents were doing lots of things for me as giving me food, bathing me, dressing me up. Now, I can do all of these by myself.
I have change because I now know how to do a lot of things as walking, doing attractions, speaking…
I have also change because I grow taller and bigger. I can notice my muscles got much stronger years after years (I do a lot of ballet) and my brain develop (thanks to school, reading, watching TV, listening to my parents and family) because I learn so many things and now, I can speak two languages.
I have changed since I have started school because I have made friends and became more intelligent as I learn and discover different topics.
ps: I have sent a picture of me when I was one week old! an you guess who I am?
Hello Violette,
Thank you for your answers. You have grown much stronger as you have grown up and I have seen that you are a very beautiful ballet dancer with strong muscles.
I am having lots of fun trying to identify you all from your photographs!
Hi Everyone !
I hope you are all well and safe ?
My parent have told me so many embarrassing stories of when I was little but that is normal. Now that I am older I have more control of how I react to things and how I feel.
I am now capable of eating by my self, brushing my hair and a lot more things.
Now that I am 9 I am more independent and more smarter that I was when I was little. For example I am much taller than I was when I was little and my baby teeth have fallen out and now I have most of my adult teeth.
Hi Elena,
My parents have many embarrassing stories about me when I was little too-which they love to share!
You have a good understanding of how you have developed.
Could you try the challenge?
Ah Violette – it’s you – the tiny baby!
So… I now see Violette, Nika + Elena?
Good afternoon Jeanne,
Thank you for sending me the Science work that you have recorded in your Home Learning book. You have thought really carefully about this task and I found your observation about the different life spans very interesting. I’m glad humans live for longer than a day!
Well done Nika for such a great answer (I can’t seem to reply directly to you, so I hope you see this!) I agree with you when you say that growing up is both physical and mental, and we do all get more mature as we grow. One of the hardest things I think it is to learn is resilience and we definitely need to keep working on that!
I definitely learnt something new from your facts, I can’t believe elephants are pregnant for two years!
Well done Nika from me too! Thank you for your lovely comments about our school and the St. Vincent’s staff-I agree that they are amazing, as are all of you and your supportive parents!
Hi Everyone.
I think what happened to me as I got older is that I have different opinions to when I was younger and have different habits and I like stuff I used to not like. I’ve changed since I was a baby I think my hair was darker then than now and I also use to use a dummy but now I don’t .I think I’ve changed since I’ve started school by getting taller and cleverer.
CHALLENGE:
Compared to humans insects lifespan is a lot shorter than humans, insects usually have thousands of young because they know less-than half of them are going to survive. Turtles are left full of danger around them while monkeys live in tribes that stick together but no animals stick together as long as humans do.
Year 5, thank you so much for uploading your baby photos! I have had so much fun identifying you all. How wonderful to see you have grown into healthy children full of incredible talents. I taught most of you in Year 1 so it has been fascinating to see how much you have grown since then too, not just academically but in maturity as well.
Morning Class 5!
I see a new baby photo – I recognised this little girl straight away!
Hi Everyone,
As I have grown older, I’ve become more mature and independent; my parents no longer need to follow me all around the place and I can eat on my own. When I was a child, I had food all over my face at my meals!
Unlike when I was a toddler, my parents do not have to follow me everywhere, because I can walk, talk and eat on my own.
My body has also changed, because I have grown taller and stronger and my brain has developed a lot since I was a baby. Even my skin has become thicker and my hair has grown much longer; My voice has also become much louder.
Since the start of school, I have changed a lot because in Nursery, I played all day long but now throughout the years I’ve learnt many useful skills, to be brave, to apply for different activities, read, write, to perform in front of lots of people in the school assembly and remember my lines, make more independent choices and how to socialise with other children and adults.
CHALLENGE:
The life cycle of a human compares to that of other animals because we are all born/hatch and every animal grows from baby to child to adult. We also all have a time in our life in which we are set free to live on our own like animals do.
Some other animals who are highly dependant on their parents are elephants, bears and cubs as their parents need to teach them how to hunt and protect themselves from predators or us. Some animals that don’t depend on their parents are fish because after a few months, they start to live in the sea on their own.
It that Marco?
Is that Zavan in white?
