Good Morning Year 2!

Click here for a printable version of this blog post: Thursday Science printable

In our last Science lesson, we worked towards our Healthy Me Award. How did you get on? If you didn’t complete them all or have a chance to do some of the activities, have another look and do another one if you want.

Today we’re going to focus on the healthy eating part. As you are going to be experts in the kitchen by the end of this, you’ll need a proper chef’s hat.

Why do you think you need to wear a chef’s hat while you are cooking?

Did you know that originally, the height of the hat represented the rank of the chef? The taller the hat, the more important the chef.

There are lots of ways you could try to make it. When you are designing your hat, see if you can answer these questions:

Once you have answered these questions and designed your hat. It is time to try and make it! You could use lots of different materials to make it, but the easiest is probably paper. This video gives ideas of how to make it with paper and plastic bags.

Then it is time to test it! Does it fit on your head? Does it stop your hair falling into your face (and food!) while you are cooking?

Send in your answers to the questions, any drawings of your designs or a photo of you in your new chef hat. If you do manage to make it, then keep it safe as you’ll need it for one of our blogs tomorrow 🙂

  6. MADELEINE YEAR 2 says:

I did it on my doll. I did it with fabric because it is more solid. I did it with my mum. First we cut out the shapes. The shapes are a circle and a long rectangle.
Then I put the pins in the rectangle to know where to sew. I sewed with the sewing machine. After I sewed with my hands around the circle and at the end I did not cut of the thread.
Then I sewed the circle on the tube. Finally I pulled the thread to make it more like a cylinder.

  7. Miss Carruthers says:

Wow Madeleine. I’m impressed you were able to sew your hat together! Why do you think chefs need hats when they are cooking?

  8. Do you know Madeleine my mum taught me how to use a sewing machine when I was the same age as you. I hope you’re enjoying learning about all the different parts of the machine. One day you might even make clothes for yourself.

  11. Marisa M says:

I think paper is best because it is more flexible.
We need plastic bag paper, stapler and scissors.
    The hat has 2 parts.
We checked the size and I put it on my head.
We stapled two paper parts and then put it on and checked the size. Then we were ready to staple the other part to make a ring.

  12. Miss Carruthers says:

Brilliant Marisa. Flexible is a very good word to use to describe paper.

  13. 1. I think the card would be sturdier than paper but it might be easier to make with paper.
    2. I will need card/paper and a plastic bag. Also a scissors and stapler.
    3. I think it has 2 parts, a paper bottom and a plastic bag on top.
    4. Measure the head do you know how big to make it.
    5. I balance the hat on my head to make sure it stays there.
    ??‍???‍??

  14. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done for answering the questions Nadine. I hope you and your dinosaur have fun cooking!

  15. Catherine says:

Chefs wear hats so hair doesn’t go into the food.

    1. Paper is best to use.
    2. The hat has 2 parts.
    3. I used paper, staplers, a plastic bag and a pair of scissors.
    4. I measured my head size so I could know how many pieces of paper to staple together.

  16. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done Catherine! Your hat looks great!

  17. Sophia B says:

    1) A chef ?‍?wears a hat so hair doesn’t go in to his or her food ?.
2)Paper ? is good to use because it is easier to fold.
3)We need paper and carrier bags? to make the hat.
4)We will put the paper round our heads?‍♀️ to see how big to make it.
5)It will stay on my head if it’s the right size??.

I have sent a picture of my hat ?‍?. Rocco made one too ?‍?.

  18. Miss Carruthers says:

Brilliant Sophia! I’m glad you and Rocco had fun making the hats!

  19. Perhaps your dad could borrow your hat Sophia when he goes back to work!

  20. Well done everyone. I am loving looking at you all in your hats. I hope you all went on to cook something tasty afterwards or maybe you could use it when you next do some cooking.

  21. Mrs B.O’Neill says:

Some great ideas. You all look great in your hats. Maybe one day when you grow up, you may decide to become a chef.

  22. I watched some videos and decided to make my own design from two pieces of paper and glue. I thought card would be stronger but we didn’t have any. My mummy helped me to measure my head with a measuring tape to make sure the hat fitted. It is 55cm.
I think a chef’s hat will help protect a chef’s head because a kitchen has lots of hot things in it.

  23. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done! I hope it turned out well.
