Good Morning Year 2!

Click here for a printable version of today’s blog post: Thursday Science printable

We’re starting a new topic in Science called ‘Healthy Me’. There’s lots to learn about being healthy, some things we do already and some things we may need to start doing to make sure we stay healthy. Today, we’re going to work towards getting the ‘Healthy Me Award’ and so have four things we need to learn.

1. How can I be safe and happy?

Keeping healthy is not just about eating and exercise, it is also about having healthy minds and relationships. I want you to think about what makes you happy. Can you make a collage of all the things that make you happy? You can use drawings, words or cut out some pictures from magazines or print some pictures from the internet. Here are some things you could include:

  • People who are important to me
  • Things I like about myself
  • Things that I think I do well
  • Things that I would like to get better at
  • Things that I like to do to cheer myself up
  • How I help myself when I am sad, angry, nervous or frustrated
  • What I like to do with my friends or family
  • Who I can talk with if I am sad or worried

2. Is exercise good for me?

There are lots of ways that we can do exercise, although it is slightly harder for us right now! But what are you doing in your daily exercise? Exercise helps us bodies to be fitter and stronger by strengthening our muscles and our heart.

Do a little experiment to see which exercise makes your heart beat the fastest. Pick 4 types of exercise and do them for the same length of time. As soon as you are finished, measure your heart rate (you do this by feeling for your pulse on your wrist or neck and counting how many beats in a minute). You might need an adult or older sibling to help you. Use this table below to record your results. Some examples of exercise could be a walk, star jumps, hopping, yoga stretches, sprinting.

3. Which foods help me to stay healthy?

Look at this picture, which snacks are healthy and which ones are not?

I would like you to design a healthy snack to have with your family. You can use foods from the picture and anything else you think would be healthy. If you have the food in your cupboard, you could even make the healthy snack for your family!

4. Why is personal hygiene important?

We know more than ever the importance of staying clean and washing our hands to stop germs spreading. I hope you are all remembering to wash your hands. Watch this video to see why it is so important to wash your hands. You could try this experiment yourselves at home, all you need is a bowl or plate of water, some pepper and soap.

There’s a lot to do to stay healthy and so there are a lot of activities here. Don’t worry if you can’t get them all done today, but keep trying to get them done so that you can get your ‘Healthy Me Award’! Please send me through any photos of your collages, science experiments or snacks that you have done. You can share your thoughts for each of the challenges on the blog.

Madeleline – I love youre poster about what makes you happy! It is so creative and colourful! It would also make me happy to be back at school, hopefully we won’t have to wait too much longer. I hope you get to play hide and seek with your family this week!

  2. Yes I love your poster too Madeleine and like you and Miss Carruthers it would make me so happy to see Year 2 again.

  3. Anna & Esther says:

We tried the experiment ? first it didn’t work but then it did. Our brother helped us with the experiment.

  4. Miss Carruthers says:

Did you enjoy the experiment? I’m glad your brother could help you. Do you have any tips to share with the rest of the class so that they can make sure it works for them?

  5. Anna and Esther – brothers can be useful!

  6. Things that make me happy:
    1. Reading (if it’s a good book).
    2. Cycling and scooting in the park.
    3. Walking my dog on a lead.
    4. Eating chocolate (I know it isn’t very healthy, but I don’t eat much at a time).
    5. Other nice food includes: strawberries, mango, cheese (not blue cheese or any other rich cheese), salmon and venison (except when it’s too spicy).
    6. Swimming, but I can’t swim at the moment, sadly.
    7. Trampolining, but I can’t do that either.
    8. Writing and drawing.
    9. Marble runs and LEGO.
    10. Playing with my friends (or FaceTiming or Zooming them in lockdown).

  7. Miss Carruthers says:

This is an excellent list – I’m so glad you could find so many things that make you happy. It is sad that we can’t do some of our favourite things at the moment, but I am impressed that you have adapted some so that you can still do them. It is definitely okay to have a little treat every now and then!

  8. Well Rex I certainly know how marble runs and Lego make you happy! I must say I certainly like eating chocolate too though, like you, not too much. I love this list Rex as you can always look at it and choose something to do to make you happy – well except for trampolining or swimming at the moment.

  9. I will post my collage later. I did the exercise for 30 sec each:

Squats ?hr, Berkies 70hr, Stretching 59hr, Star jumps ?rh

Healthy foods: Bananas, yogurt, pear, raisins
Unhealthy foods: Chocolate, cheese, lollies, cake, sausage roll.

Cheese can be healthy but not a lot.

  10. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done for sorting the healthy and unhealthy food.

Great work on the exercises – for some reason, some of your numbers have come up as question marks! Which one made your heart beat the most?

  11. Wow Layla you must be exhausted after all that exercise. I bet it put your heart rate up!

  12. Emilia & Isabella says:

We did the experiment too when my mum wanted to show us how important is to wash your hands. The black peppers are bacteria.
I painted healthy snacks (Emilia). I drew healthy snacks ( Isabella).

  13. Dear miss Carruthers,
I have done my collage Healthy me picture.

  14. I love your collage Sophie. Yes friends make me feel happy too. Even if I can’t see them right now I love talking to them on the phone.

  15. Dear Miss Carruthers,

I made a snack made of white Greek yogurt, pears ? and ? and a sprinkle of Rice Krispies . It is one of my favourite snacks. I think it is healthy. Bananas, currents and cheese are healthy too. Cake, chocolate and lollipops not so healthy but delicious.
Others things that make me happy are my family and friends. I like walking in the country sides and and I like sitting in the sun. I like the sea too. I love animals and I like going to the zoo. I like to read and play with my sister. I like to listen to audiobooks. Enid Blyton is my favourite author. I like to dance to music and I like watching tv.

  16. You know Marie lots of the things that make you happy make me happy too – family and friends, the sea, walking in the countryside and animals, especially dogs. I used to love Enid Blyton too when I was your age. It’s funny how some not so healthy foods are really delicious isn’t it? Well it’s okay if we don’t eat too much of them. I love the sound of your yoghurt snack. It’s making me want one right now.

  17. Dear Miss Carruthers,

I thought the experiment was amazing. We did it in the kitchen. It worked really well.
A healthy snack would be mango slices. I thought the yoghurt, cheese, raisins, pears, sausage rolls and bananas were healthy snacks and that the rest were not healthy.
My mum said the sausage rolls are maybe not so healthy because there is a lot of butter and fat in them but daddy likes them as a snack.
