Good morning Year 5,
Today’s English focus is: Grammar.
Here is your Grammar activity for today (click on the image to enlarge):
Last week you looked at subordinating conjunctions and learnt that it is a part of a sentence that adds additional information to the main clause.
A coordinating conjunction, on the other hand, joins words that link together parts of a sentence. The three main coordinating conjunctions are ‘and’, ‘but’ and ‘or’. You can see some examples here: BBC Bitesize: Coordinating Conjuctions.
Please click on the useful links below to remind yourself of the terminology:
What is a fronted adverbial?
What is a subordinate clause/conjuction?
What is a noun phrase?
What is a comma?
You can answer in your Home Learning books and then try out the challenge by answering in the blog comments.
Challenge:
Can you write a paragraph which includes all of the above?
We look forward to reading your responses,
Mrs Avdiu & Ms Robertson
You find the printable version of this blog here:Tuesday Week 2 English
Please consider the environment and only print if you need to.
Hello Mrs Avdiu hello everyone this is my paragraph:
My cousins favorite subject at school is PE and English because he loves doing sport and he is very good at grammar [my subject in this sentence is my cousin and my subordinate claws in this sentence is he loves doing sport and he is very good at grammar]. His favourite thing to do is to ride his blue, new and clean skateboard [ my adjective is blue, new and clean my comma was in between blue and new and my conjunction was and].
Thanks Claudia. If Grammar is a lesson then it needs a capital letter otherwise it would be ‘his grammar is very good’.

Sitting at his desk, Franco was bored. The lecture that his teacher was giving was about the properties of iron and it couldn’t be less exciting. So when the bell rang for break time, Franco pushed his way through the crowd as fast as he could to get outside. Quickly, he ran to the other side of the playground so that he could get to the ‘good spot’ on the wall first, but somebody was already there. A young boy of around eight years old was sitting on it reading.
Well done for varying your sentences starters – you even started some of them with adverbs. I’m impressed!

Paragraph
Yesterday I saw a vicious fox in the woods. My family packed water but forgot to pack food. It started to rain, we headed back home. I like to run because it is fun. My brother Callum scored a goal against me in football.
Thanks Dylan. Your paragraph needs to be around the same theme rather than separate sentences all in one paragraph. Have a look at the other comments for an example 🙂
Hi everyone, this is what I wrote for my paragraph.
Earlier, that Friday morning, the family next door was woken up again by the most horrible sounds. Troy the engineer, was working on his latest Coffee-Jelly Maker 3000. Due too all the drilling and loud music, Troy didn’t hear all the yelling of his neighbours that lived 10 meters away. Finally, it was time to go to school. Troy packed his scruffy bag, put on his shoes and left. This term at school, you were allowed to bring in one gadget a week, but you weren’t allowed to bring in anything with glass. As the day dragged on and on, Friday became a wet afternoon.
Ava I am super impressed with the way you used clauses and commas to include extra information. Well done!
Hello everyone, hope that you are all okay! Here is my paragraph:
Creeping down the winding staircase, Patricia made sure to skip over the fifth step for fear of making any noise. Heart in throat, she opened the tall mahogany door, floorboards creaking as she went. One final push of the door and she was out! She started to run, even though she knew she would be caught. Swiftly, Patricia dodged past the heavy metal dustbins and made her way to the woods, shielded by the darkness.
Excellent variety of sentence starters. My favourite was ‘Heart in throat’! Well done for using figurative language in your writing 🙂
The giant shark swam below the reef.
You can bring juice on the trip, but glass bottles are not allowed.
Before the sun came up, she stood and waited.
EVEN THOUGH IT WAS RAINING, the children still played outside.
The DOLPHIN jumped out of the water.
Thanks Gabi! Can you try the challenge?
Well done Clauldia!
You managed to fit in everything!
My only constructive feedback is, instead of – is very good at grammar – I’d say – his grammar is very good.
Keep -up the good work! ?

Hello Mrs Avdiu, here is my paragraph:
As quick as a flash, Chris and Richard opened Kate’s bedroom door and closed it with a key. The walls were covered with pink, glittery paper that made Chris feel sick. Next to a shelf full of books, a bed stood. Its sheets were pink too, but the cushion was purple. To Richard’s right, a chest full of new, colorful and girly toys was opened. In front of a window, Kate’s pretty, clean desk held a lamp which was covered with heart and teddy bear stickers. Next to a wall, a wardrobe whose door was badly closed stood out. But suddenly, the wardrobe’s door flung open. Richard’s stomach lurched. Chris’s heart missed a beat. “What are you doing in my room?” growled Kate…
This sounds like something out of one of your books! I hope you are still writing books. I can’t wait to read more of your ‘published’ books when we return to school 🙂

Fantastic paragraph! Yes, I always enjoy reading your work 🙂 Have a lovely time at home.
Hi,
This an extract of my story I am writing. Hope you enjoy.
After a short walk, I make it to my friend’s house. His house is the same size as mine but has blue bricks instead of black. I ring the door and like usual Chad‘s mum answers it. But he is not in. He is always in. Where could he have gone? “Did he say where he was going?” I asked. She answered with a casual shake of the head. I had no hints to where he could have gone. It would be midnight by the time I had checked all my friend’s houses. If I had super-speed this would be so much easier. I guess my only option is facing Kari. This will be a challenge. I made my short walk home and climbed the tall, green ivy wall. Falling through my window, I landed on my bed just in time for my mother to open the door on me lying there. “How long have u been here?” she asked with her mind reading look. I must play this very carefully.
Honeko I’m very impressed with your consistent use of the present tense!

CHALLENGE:
As quick as a flash, Riley ran down to Emily’s room. “I need to read it! I need to read her diary!” ? she said to herself. “She read mine, I knew that I shouldn’t have written that about James and Emily. They are annoying, though… Anyways…”
Riley reached Emily’s door ? that had a sign saying “DO NOT ENTER! OR ELSE! ?”
“Oh, well…” Riley took out her marker and scribbled the word “NOT” out of the sentence, crossed out the angry emoji and replaced it with a happy one. ”If Emily comes in – she will know that I “kinda” had permission.” Riley giggled to herself and read out the sign quietly. “DO ENTER! OR ELSE! ?”
Once she got there, Riley looked absolutely everywhere to finD the key ? to Emily’s diary. She had to be as quiet ? as a mouse ? so that her sister wouldn’t know that she is in her room. “Got it! The key ? is mine and so is the diary ? “ thought ? Riley to herself. Riley ran to her own room and began to read. “Tuesday, 17th July 2020…”

Hi everyone, this is a paragraph I have written.
Whilst trying to fall asleep, James kept thinking about the amazing day he had. He went to the trampoline park with all his friends, where he had the most incredible time. After all the jumping, he and his friends all went out for pizza. Happily, he savoured every single bite of it. When he got home, he told his parents all about the great day he had. It was the best experience ever.
