Hello Class 5!
This week you have some music homework! We are going to look at some composers from the Baroque period of music…
The Baroque Period refers to music and composers roughly between 1600 and 1750.
•Music in this era was very organised, elaborate and dramatic.
•The harpsichord was commonly used.
•Harmonies were incorporated (the combination of more than one note at the same time).
Listen to some Baroque music below (you don’t need to listen to it all, perhaps just 2 minutes):
Answer these questions on the blog (or in your book if you prefer):
1.) Which other instruments can you hear?
2.) How does the music make you feel and why?
3.) Find a composer from the Baroque Period. Can you tell me their name and an interesting fact about them?
I look forward to reading your thoughts and interesting facts. Make sure you read other comments so that you don’t post the same fact as someone else!
From Miss Lee 🙂
Hello Miss Lee,
I think all I can hear is a lot of violin each playing a different tunes at a different time. Sometimes getting louder then gentle, slow then quick.
When the music is smooth and gentle it makes me feel calm and a bit sleepy. Sometimes I close my eyes and Sway my head in time to the Music. When the music is fast and loud I feel like I want to dance, like my heart is pouncing in all directions.
A very detail description Elisa, thank you!
Can you find out an interesting fact about a composer from the Baroque Period?
I can hear violin and piano….. that’s it

I agree there are violins and Harpsichord, but there may also be some Viola because some sounds have a higher pitch. May be also some Cello for the lower pitches.
I like the music a lot, it makes me calm and peaceful, but sometimes it creates some excitement.
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) is also another musician from the Baroque period.
This Italian violinist has composed this very famous piece called Four Seasons, Four concerto for violins, one for each season.
Well done Stella, I can tell that you listened carefully to the music. It is great that the music made you feel a contrast of feelings from calm to excited! Yes, Vivaldi is a very famous composer! Did you listen to Four Seasons? If you did, I am sure you would recognise it and most definitely have heard it before!
Hi Miss Lee! Mostly I hear different volumes and different tunes from violins and cellos. What I feel from the music is elegance and has a slight graceful feeling to it.
Fact about Johann Sebastian Bach:
His father named Johann Ambrosius was a 7th generation musician, and continued the tradition by teaching him how to play the violin. Unfortunately, Bach lost both of his parents at the age of 10.
Hello Clare! It is great that you have listened so well to the music, thank you for sharing your thoughts!

He was born 1678. Vivaldi was living in Venice. Before being a musician he was a priest. He was a virtuoso violinist. He became a very famous music teacher for Young girls in a orphanage and they became excellent musicians. I have listened to the 4 seasons and The Gloria. I have heard possibly violin, viola and cello? I am amazed they can play all together.
I have listened to George Frideric Handel who was a German Baroque composer: he spent much of his career in London, where he died in 1759. My mum likes his Messiah especially the Hallelujah Chorus.
They do make a beautiful sound when they all play together don’t they?
Some interesting facts and it is lovely that you discovered a piece that your mum enjoys! Did you listen to it with her?
Dear miss Lee,
I hear lots of violins. I really like the music because my mummy can play Bach on the piano as well, so I recognise some songs. Another very well known composer is Vivaldi. He’s known for his famous music called ‘Four Seasons’.
Wow your mum must be very talented on the piano! How lucky that you can listen to her play some Bach pieces at home!
Hello Paulo
I sang Handel’s Messiah with my choir at Westminster Abbey last year, I agree with your mum, the Hallelujah Chorus is fantastic! Do you know that it is traditional for the audience to stand up during this famous chorus, some say because King George II rose to his feet when he first heard it…
Many of you have mentioned The Four Seasons by Vivaldi. I wonder which season you preferred? I love the Summer’s thunderstorm ⛈ 🌩
hello miss lee, i can hear the violin in the background and the music makes me feel happy but kind of scared because it has got low instruments in the background.
Hello Holly! Ah yes sometimes the lower notes can add suspense to the music!
I can hear the violin and the cello and maybe some double-bass?I don’t know because I’m not an expert at music…
The music makes me feel uplifted for a couple of minutes, but then it makes me feel drowsy and sleepy…
Antonio Vivaldi:
Antonio’s dad was teaching him how to play the violin(what I’m playing)and his dad was a professional violinist but also a barber.at the age of 15,he began studies to become a future priest, and was nicknamed II prêt rosso, which means the red priest.
Hello Amarissa!
Well done for listening out for some of the instruments. Maybe you could research what the instruments you have mentioned sound like? The music is quite relaxing isn’t it? It can make us feel sleepy or calm.
Very interesting facts about Vivaldi! Did you listen to any of his music?
