This week, we have had a very exciting introductory lesson into our Anglo-Saxons and Vikings topic. Class 5 had a brilliant discussion centring around the Roman withdrawal in 410AD. We learned all about the Dark Ages and began to answer our Big Question; “‘is ‘the Dark Ages’ a good name for this period?”
As a class, we split into different tribes that would have been present during the Roman withdrawal. This includes tribes from continental Europe such as the Angles, Saxons and Jutes which collectively came to be known as the Anglo-Saxons. We also included tribes that were already in the North of Britain such as the Picts and the Scots.
Class 5 did an incredible job of creating short dramas based on what they thought these tribes would be thinking, feeling, seeing around them and how they would be acting in response to this change to life in Britain. Excellent job Year 5 – I’m very proud of the work that you produced and I can see that you have all enjoyed reaching your first learning objective in History this year.
Please comment a short reflection below on Thursday’s lesson in response to our big question:
Is ‘the Dark Ages’ a good name for this period?
Why do you think this?
Challenge: Do you think the Romans should have left Britain?
The dark ages is a good name for this period of time because it was a time of fighting and battles for Britain between many tribes: the Jutes , the Saxons ,the Angles ,the Scots and the Picts. I really enjoyed this lesson.
