Today Year 4 participated in a 3-D art workshop with an artist from the October Gallery!
The workshop was linked to our Extreme Earth Spring term Curriculum topic, we told the artist about all of the extreme weather events and natural disasters we have been learning about in our lessons such as tsunamis, volcanoes, avalanches, earthquakes and tornadoes!
Year 4 then looked at the art of Govina Sah ‘AZAD’, a Nepalese artist who has exhibited his pieces at the gallery and finds inspiration within the universe. We used maps to find where Nepal is located on the Earth, and some of us spotted that the Himalayan mountains run through Nepal! The children discussed the importance of discovering more about an artist’s heritage and background, as it might give us some clues about what inspires their art work. For example, the extreme landscapes of Azad’s home country might influence the artist’s focus in his pieces:
We discussed the different feelings and interpretations which these paintings evoke for us. Some of the class felt excited and found similarities between the paintings and extreme weather events, while others felt nervous, calm or intrigued by the art work. From the instructor we learnt that it is okay to have different interpretations and art is based on the individual ideas we have to create something unique using our own feelings and experiences.
Year 4 then worked on their own 3-D sculptures, using the Extreme Earth as inspiration. The class used card board and foil to build a base of their structure. We strengthened and smoothed out the surface of our sculptures using masking tape. Then, it was ready for papier-mâché! We got sticky and messy but it was lots of fun sticking strips of newspaper to our sculptures.
We will be painting them next week when they are all dry and have hardened!
Thank you to the October Gallery for providing such a brilliant workshop for Year 4! I hope you all enjoyed it!
What was your favourite part of the workshop this morning?
My favourite part was when we put newspaper on our object. I look forward to painting my sculpture next week!
My favourite part of it was making it and painting it🥰😍🥳🤩🎨
