This week in Art, Year 4 we have been revisiting our drawing skills learnt in Year 3 to complete a sketch of Roman architecture with a focus on shadows and reflections.

Inspiration:

·       We looked at the famous architect Francis Fowke

Imitate:

·       We experimented with shading to create interesting effects with the challenge of recreating an image

Innovate:

·       We created our version of a sketch of a piece of Roman architecture of our choice

Firstly, we looked at the work of the famous architect Francis Fowke and explored his architectural drawings. We found out that he was responsible for the design of The Royal Albert Hall in South Kensington. He also designed the building of the National History Museum and was seen as a leading expert in his field during the late 1800s.

We then looked at Roman architecture and the different type of buildings there were such as temples, colosseums and theatres. Our first task was to take half an sketch image and have a go at completing the other half so it matched. We had to use different shapes and contrast to create reflections and tone.

Finally it was our turn to have a go at sketching a Roman building of our choice from scratch. It was important for us to take our time and use lighter pressure at first before adding detail with darker shading.

Year 4, you have all produced some wonderful sketches. What was the hardest bit of drawing your sketch?

I really enjoyed sketching Roman architecture. Using light strokes was tricky at first but I slowly understood how not to put too much pressure as I went along. It was a fun lesson. Thank you teacher for this art class.

I loved doing sketching today. At first I thought it would turn out really bad because of the starting shapes but at the end it turned out really good if I looked closely at the picture .
