This week, Year 2 have taken part in an art workshop, led by a fantastic artist from the October Gallery. To begin the workshop, we looked at the work of Rachid Koraïchi, an artist from the Gallery.

By looking at a selection of their work, we began to see and realise that art can be very subjective in terms of what we can see within art – some of us saw mythical beasts, while others saw letters and a selection of shapes. We then thought about the repeating patterns that we see in Koraïchi’s artwork and began to link this to some of the work by M.C. Escher.

We took part in different activities that allowed us to explore our creativity, as we warmed up by sharing our ideas through collaboration. We passed our work around the room, each adding detail to what came before. We used different colours, patterns and styles to contribute to the overall piece. We tested our memory as we looked at Escher’s Impossible Staircase. We discussed the way that Escher would often use maths in his art, creating interesting pieces that seemed to have no start or end in sight! We looked at the image for 10 seconds and had a go at recreating it, based upon what we could remember from the image. We then had the chance to look carefully at the picture, practising our sketching skills to carefully re-create parts of his work.
We then tried to make our own repeating patterns, using our own stencils. We worked really hard to encourage our friends if they found something tricky, and made sure to take our time when it came to our artwork.
Take a look at our fantastic artwork!
It was really fun
