This morning, Year 6 were lucky enough to take part in a workshop led by the October Gallery.

We started by looking at some artworks by different artists  from around the world which are on display at the October Gallery.

Then, we had the chance to use pastels in different ways with the added challenge of keeping our eyes closed while we did it!

Next, it was time to tear, roll, twist and concertina the strips of paper before mixing them all up and then swapping tables so that we were using another group’s creations.

We each had great fun, creating a hanging sculpture, inspired by the artist Naomi Wanjiku Gakunga,  using the paper strips, tape, pipe cleaners, fabric,  bells and wooden batons. We were thrilled to also be given cowrie shells to use and we felt very wealthy as we know that they were used as money in the Kingdom of Benin!

Thank you so much to Vic from the October Gallery for coming to lead this workshop for us today.

What did you enjoy most about the workshop today, Year 6?

What I enjoyed the most about the workshop was that we couldn’t see what we were drawing which made it kind of interesting.

  6. I enjoyed when we had to make our strips of paper with different techniques and the pastels we used had to move in a particular way so it would be unexpected when you opened your eyes it would be extraordinary.

The techniques we used were curling up and folding on the front side then the back side and on and on.

I liked mine because we could add some shells and a bell. We used a variation of colours making it very fun and creative.

  7. This was really fun and creative to do! I never knew a few ripping and some scribbles could create a good artwork.

I really liked the workshop because it inspired me for things that i could start making at home or for what I might want to do when I am older. It also taught me that nothing has to look perfect.
