This week in assembly, we looked at another British Value – Democracy.

Miss Carruthers explained that she had come up with a new rule:

Some children were happy with the new rule, but lots of others were not. We talked about why it isn’t fair for one person to make all the rules by themselves and how it is important to take the views of everyone. We decided to do a vote and this new rule was overturned!

We then thought of all the different ways that we use democracy in school:

  • voting for our School Council and Green Team representatives

  • deciding which charities to support with events throughout the year (voted by the representatives)

  • voting for which products the class will make in Enterprise Week

  • School Council visiting the Houses of Parliament and debating a new law

Can you think of any other ways we use democracy at school?

We can do more voting at school. Also we can let everyone say their opinions and their thoughts.

We can use democracy at school by doing a debate.

Studying democracy was really important I learnt a lot about people who create rules and how they impact all of us. Having something to say is important but is also our right as citizens we also have to comply with the law but we can ask for it to be changed or amended creating a better opportunity to everyone.

My mum has been teaching me about democracy. I think it is important to have a voice and a chance to be heard.
Rules and Laws are part of this world and they are important to follow and abide by. Every person should vote when they are able to in school or when we grow up. Democracy is a vast topic. There is so much to say. Thank you Miss. Carruthers.
