Today, in our Religious Education lesson we focused on Catholic Social Teaching.

Catholic social teaching is rooted in Scripture and formed by the wisdom of Church leaders It is our moral compass, guiding us on how to live out our faith in the world.

There are seven principles to Catholic Social Teaching:

  • Life and Dignity of the Human Person

  • Call to Family, Community, and Participation.

  • Rights and Responsibilities.

  • Preferential Option for the Poor.

  • The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers.

  • Solidarity.

  • Care for God’s Creation.

We are currently focusing on the seventh principle, ‘Care for God’s Creation’. In the first pages of the Bible we read how God created the sun and the stars, the water and earth, and every creature.

Today, we looked at the teachings of Pope Francis and the current issues of the climate crisis.

In 2015, Pope Francis brought together decades of Church teaching in his encyclical (which means an influential letter) ‘Laudato Si’. In this letter, Pope Francis invites everyone on the planet to consider how our actions are affecting the earth and the poorest people. It is our Christian vocation to care for creation.

After looking at Pope Francis’ teachings,  we looked at lots of statements about God’s Creation and took part in a debate. It was great to hear everyone’s different opinions and the lesson made us reflect on the way we live our lives.
