As part of the Schools to Market project, some members of Green Team were invited to take part in a chutney making masterclass.
We travelled to St Thomas More Language College to use their cooking classroom. A leader from the project taught us how to make chutney. She explained that chutney uses some sugar, salt and vinegar which help preserves the fruit and vegetables. This means that when you harvest a ‘glut’ of fruit and vegetables, and you end up with more than you can eat, you don’t want them to rot and go to waste. So chutney is a delicious way to keep the fruit and vegetables for longer and reduces food waste. They had a lot of beetroot as it is in season at the moment and so we made Beetroot, Apple and Ginger Chutney.
She reminded us how to hold a knife safely and how to chop the different ingredients. We also had to use weighing scales to measure out all the dry ingredients before putting everything in a saucepan and boiling off the excess liquid. We had to sterilise our recycled jars to make sure they were fully clean before we filled them with our delicious chutney.
When you make a chutney, it is best to leave it for a couple of weeks to enhance the flavour. We can’t wait to try our chutney after half term!
Next month, Year 2 are going to visit a farm in Surrey and collect some fruit and vegetables. We are then going to teach them how to make some delicious chutney from these and then we will sell them in Whole Foods in High Street Kensington. We can’t wait!
If you want to make some at home, here’s the recipe we used:
You all worked so hard! I bet you all had fun making the chutney! Looks yummy! Well done green team!
