This week, our Design Technology lesson turned us into budding engineers and architects!
We learned about what makes buildings and objects stable, which means they don’t fall over easily. We found out that being short, having a wide bottom, and a flat base are very important for stability. Our first task was to make different shapes using modeling dough and stiff cardboard, like pyramids, spheres, cuboids, and cylinders, and then test how stable they were. We tilted our cardboard to see which shapes stayed standing and which ones fell over. We used our knowledge of measurement to measure how high we could tilt the cardboard too. We discovered that low pyramids and cuboids were the most stable, while spheres and cylinders were the wobbliest. We then evaluated a range of chairs for Baby Bear and assessed which ones were stable and which were not.
Next, we used what we learned to design and build a chair for Baby Bear using only coloured card and masking tape! We made sure our chairs could stand without falling, be strong enough to hold Baby Bear, and stay stiff. We also thought about what colors and patterns Baby Bear might like, if the chair needed a backrest, the size, and how many legs it should have. The classroom was filled with the sound of cutting, taping, and lots of chatter as we worked on our designs. We had so much fun making our chairs come to life!
After we finished our first attempt at making our chairs, some of us were able to test them with our classroom teddy bears to see how stable and strong they were. We talked about what worked well and what could be better. This hands-on activity was not only fun but also helped us understand important ideas about building and stability. We had a great time creating and testing our chairs, and we learned a lot about making strong and stable structures. We are looking forward to re-visiting and improving our designs next week. We hope to make them perfect for Baby Bear!
