This half term, our Design Technology focus has been on food and nutrition.
We started these lessons by exploring the journey of ingredients from farm to fork, learning how different foods are reared and processed before reaching our plates. To put our knowledge to the test, we carried out a blind taste test of three different shop-bought spaghetti bolognese sauces, evaluating their flavours, textures and overall appeal before voting on our favourites. We also examined the packaging and designs of these products, considering how they influence the choices that we make whilst shopping!
In preparation for making our own spaghetti bolognese, we discussed the importance of preventing cross-contamination and why different coloured chopping boards are used in food preparation. Although we didn’t use them ourselves, it was an important discussion to have. We also discussed and experimented with nutritional values. We used an Excel spreadsheet to put in a range of different amounts of salt, beef, chilli, olive oil etc. and saw the way in which this changed the nutritional values per serving. We spoke about what these tell us about the food we eat. We know that the green, orange and red colours on labels are a part of a traffic light system that help us to see quickly how healthy a food product is. These apply to things like fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt. If most of the label is green, it’s a healthier option!
When it came to cooking, we split into two groups: one prepared and cooked a vegetarian version, while the other made a beef-mince option. We were incredibly grateful for the support of the brilliant Ms Cimmino, who helped us throughout the process! While one group was busy in the kitchen, the rest of us designed packaging labels for our adapted recipes. We made sure to include key nutritional information and create bold, eye-catching designs. Underneath our labels, we wrote persuasive paragraphs to convince potential buyers to choose our product.
Finally, we came back together in the Creativity Room for the best part… tasting our food! It was a fantastic opportunity to reflect on the changes we made and celebrate our efforts. Next week, we’ll be discussing whether our recipe could be introduced to the school menu and considering any alterations that might make it even better!
