This term, St. Vincent’s have once again been given the wonderful opportunity to take part in a special Design Technology project called ‘Manufacto’.
Year 6 will have a weekly session with Emma, a specialist cabinet maker, supported by Camilla, who is studying Design, where they will learn all the practical skills involved in woodwork, including lots of opportunities for practising real life Maths skills as well.
In our first lesson this week, we met Emma and Camilla and learned about what we are going to make and the tools which we will be using. We are very excited that we are going to be using drills and saws but we will need to learn more about using them safely first!
We learned about following design briefs and exploded diagrams and also how important measuring will be to ensure that our finished lamps fit together properly and are stable.
We all had the chance to measure and draw a regular pentagon accurately (which is very tricky and involves a lot of Maths!) as we will be building our lamps around two wooden pentagons.
At the end of the project, everyone in Year 6 will have made their own working wooden lamp, which they can take home to keep.
Later in the term, we will also visit the Hermès store as well as Emma’s studio. There will also be an opportunity for all parents and carers to come and view the finished products.
Many thanks to everyone involved in this fantastic experience and to Hermès for developing and funding the project. We can’t wait to get started and we will post again soon to show you what we have been learning.
What are you looking forward to most in the Manufacto Project, Year 6?
