This week in English, we have been exploring our new text which is the narrative poem ‘Coming Home’ by Michael Morpurgo. It tells the story around Christmas time of a determined robin who wishes to get back home but faces many challenges along the way.
We firstly asked the question of what is a home? We spoke to our learning partners about what are our favourite things in our homes and what things we could hear, smell, touch and smell in our homes. Keeping with this idea, we explored the main character (the robin) and worked out how the poet used different features to describe how the robin was feeling and describe his appearance. We saw that the robin had a determined attitude to get back home even though he ran into lots of different obstacles.
In our next lesson, we then got given a section of the narrative poem each and had to practice performing it with our learning partners. We discussed tone, pitch and expression to really deliver the imagery within the poet so the audience could get a picture for what was going on. Everyone that performed was amazing!
Our last lesson for this week saw us watch Michael Morpurgo read his poem out to an audience. We had to take notes on the main points of the narrative poem as we were doing to draw a story map. This is when you use images and small bits of text to show the journey of a story. We swapped lots of amazing ideas before having a go at drawing our own story maps. They came out wonderfully!
Next week, we will be planning our own narrative poems around a Christmas them, writing them and then getting the chance to perform them in front of the class.
What did you enjoy learning about our new text ‘Coming Home’ this week?
