Recently in English, we have been studying The Journey Home.
In the story, we meet a poor polar bear who swims through icy waters to find a little boat. He set off on his journey because his fish and ice were disappearing. He eventually arrives at an enormous city where the buildings rumbled and touched the sky. A panda was sitting peacefully by the docks and decided to join him on his adventure. During their travels, they encounter a stranded orang-utan who’s forest has been cut down, and a terrified elephant who was hiding from hunters. Previously, we have focused on using the -ed suffix and spent time identifying them within the text and then tried to use them in our own writing. We also learned about irregular verbs such as swam and sat. We wrote a short postcard home from either the perspective of the polar bear or the panda, trying to use the past tense consistently.
This week, we focused on our description. With the aim of creating a form of poem, we looked a storm scene and gathered a range of nouns, adjectives and verbs.
Mrs Hope very kindly noted these down on our whiteboard so that we could refer back to them later. We then imagined that we were certain aspects of the storm (the nouns) and worked to describe them using adjectives and then used verbs to begin to explain what they were doing. For example, “I am the hideous, blue waves that crash against the petite boat” and “I am the thunderous clouds threatening every soul who dares to go against me”.
We spent time writing up our poems in our neatest handwriting, and hope that you enjoy reading some of them!
I loved using my imagination to write the poem. There are so many adjectives to choose from!! Too exciting!
I enjoyed reading the story ‘The Journey Home.’
I remember reading this story a long time ago too.
It made me sad then and now that the animals are losing their homes, have no food to eat and are being chased by hunters. 😥
This experience in looking at the storm scene and imagining who you would be creates a whole different perspective that is so many possibilities of what it could happen. The idea where we had to describe a range of nouns, adjectives and verbs and try to create a poem was interesting but challenging too as we learnt more words some irregular and others past tense verbs.
I enjoyed writing my poem using different adjectives, nouns and verbs. I liked that I could use my imagination. Creative writing is a lot of fun.
I also enjoyed reading the story of the ‘ The Journey Home.’ I remember reading this story book with my mum a long time ago.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MRS FORSTER ADAMS and thank you for organising this wonderful activity and for letting the whole class experience writing a poem.I can’t wait to do another amazingly fun activity.
This was so much fun! I wonder how this experience would feel like in real life.
‘The Journey Home’ was a good story to read. It’s a story about all the changes in our world and friendship. Our animals are losing their habitats because of deforestation. They don’t even have enough food to eat due to pollution of the earth.
It was fun writing the poem. I think creative writing is real fun. The use of nouns, adjectives and verbs was a good challenge. I would like to go on a big boat with my class friends.
