Year 6  had a wonderful day with Cheryl from the Poetry Society.  She taught us all about the Christmas tree gift from Norway that stands in Trafalgar Square every year since 1947. It’s a very special present that celebrates peace after World War 2.

Cheryl taught us about cinquain poems. A cinquain is a short poem that has specific rules about the number of syllables allowed in each line and the content of the line:      Line 1 has 2 syllables and is about the subject.    Line 2 has 4 syllables and is about what it looks like.

Line 3 has 6 syllables and is about action/purpose.   Line 4 has 8 syllables and is about feeling/emotions.

Line 5 has 2 syllables and is an echo of the first line.

As a class we wrote a cinquain poem about the forest where the tree comes from which Cheryl is going to share with the Poetry Society:

Forest

Dark green giant

Winter has been gifted

A blasting firework of stars

Tallest

We then worked in pairs to write our own ‘forest’ cinquain poem and another one around the theme of ‘journey’. Part of the joy of poetry is performing so we had the opportunity to share our poems with the class.

We went onto to read a poem which has been written by Valerie Bloom especially for this year’s Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square. In groups, we worked on creating a performance of the poem which we were able to perform to the rest of the class.

Cheryl gave us the exciting news that three children from our class will be chosen to read Valerie Bloom’s poem at Trafalgar Square when the Christmas Tree arrives-We can’t wait to find out which of our classmates will be chosen for this honour!

Thank you so much to Cheryl and everyone from the Poetry Society who made this workshop possible for us.

What did you enjoy most today, Year 6?
