Over the last few weeks we have been studying Frida Kahlo, a self taught artist from Mexico famous for her self-portraits.
Frida Kahlo was inspired by nature and her surrealist paintings often portrayed the theme of freedom. After studying Kahlo we had a go at recreating our own piece of art work inspired by her style. We noticed that the backgrounds of all Kahlos paintings are very ‘busy’, with animals and plants, which is different to the simpler style of other portrait artists such as Lowry, Picasso and Van Gogh.
Have a look below and see what you think! We practised in our sketch books before creating our frames- layering with paper, paint, beads and flowers.
In addition, as Frida Kahlo was from Mexico, in Geography, we studied the economic activity and the distribution of natural resources in Mexico. We have also learnt about the Colorado River and the journey that a river takes from source to mouth. The Colorado River is 2330km long and flows from its source in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado all the way to Northern Mexico where it empties into the Gulf of California.
We have really enjoyed this project!
