Today was Hello Yellow Day!
Today we took part in Hello Yellow Day, this is a day where children wear yellow and engage in activities surrounding mental health. Year 1 did a range of activities today all about positivity and mental health.
We started off our day by discussing mental health and what it is. The children could identify that mental health relates to your brain and feelings. We then watched a video all about mental health and found out that it can impact the way we act and behave and is just as important as our physical health.
In our next activity we spoke about feelings and the different emotions that we experience. The children listed multiple emotions and could explain what makes them feel these feelings. We spoke about happiness and positivity, the children engaged in conversations about what makes us happy and what we can do to make others happy. We then did a Hello Yellow activity and drew images of things which make us feel happy.
This afternoon we spoke about what we can do to make us feel better when we might feel sad, down or angry. The children spoke about some amazing strategies such as watching television, reading a book, drawing, going to bed early and having a nice relaxing bath. Some children also mentioned the importance of speaking to others about your feelings. We highlighted that adults are always there to support you. The children then created some positive affirmation cards which they have taken home with them to practice speaking kind words to themselves. Some of our cards said:
I am brave.
I am kind.
I am caring.
I am special.
Well done Year 1 you put in so much effort today and really showed you care about your own mental health and the mental health of others. Make sure your practicing your positive affirmations!
