This week, we have been learning about Hinduism.
We read the story about the birth of Krishna and learnt about the festival of Raksha Bandhan. Traditionally, during the festival of Raksha Bandhan, sisters tie a rakhi around their brothers’ wrists to show their love. A rakhi is a bracelet made of interwoven red and gold threads. As the sister does this, she will say something about wishing him well and hoping he will be protected from bad things. She will also give her brother a sweet. Brothers give their sisters a present. Hindus believe that if you wore a sacred thread it would protect you from bad things. Krishna advised his friends to wear one when he was in difficulty. We made Rakhi bracelets and Indian sweets. In one of our role play activities, we performed the story of Ganesh. We also learned how to perform an Indian dance and our teacher, Mrs Avdiu, dressed up in a Sari during our Hinduism assembly!
