Class 6 are just beginning our new Religious Education topic, ‘Reconciliation’. This is a very challenging topic in which we will look at caring for the sick and why Christians are called to help those in need.
To begin our topic, we had a very special visitor- Mrs Carville, who is also Finlay’s mum. She is a ‘Dementia Friend’ and talked to us about how we could become ‘Dementia Friends’ too. First of all, we learnt what dementia is and how it affects the brain. We then took part in lots of fun, interactive activities, such as thinking about all the different steps involved in getting ready in the morning. At first we thought that getting ready was a simple process, but as we thought about all the different actions, thought-processes and decision-making involved, we realised how difficult getting ready would be for a person with dementia. We also learnt about how dementia can take away so many essential parts of a person’s life including their memories. However, Mrs Carville told us that although a person with dementia may not remember specific experiences, they are still the same person who has experienced the same emotions.
The session was very thought-provoking and we hope that now we have a better understanding, we too can become ‘Dementia Friends’ and help those who we may meet with dementia to ‘live well’.
