This week we began our new topic, Traditional Tales! To launch our exciting new topic , we began by reading The Three Little Pigs together as a class. The children were captivated by the story and enjoyed joining in with the repeated phrases and learning about the different materials the pigs used to build their houses.

The pigs built their houses out of straw, sticks and bricks! The first two pigs did not want to spend a long time on building their houses, so they used materials that could be built quickly. They did not realise these are not very strong, so they were very unlucky when the big bad wolf came round! We had a lovely discussion about why the Big Bad Wolf was able to blow down the first two houses, thinking carefully about the materials used and why the brick house was so much stronger.

To bring the story to life, the Nursery children created their own versions of the three houses. Using yellow straws for the straw house, little wooden sticks for the stick house, and red paper squares to represent bricks for the clever third pig’s house. Nursery used PVA glue and glue spreaders to carefully stick the materials down onto their house templates.

This activity supported the children in exploring textures and materials, while also helping to develop their fine motor skills and understanding of the story. The children were so proud of their creations, and we had a wonderful time talking about which house they would like to live in and why!
