For the past week Year 4 have been working on position and movement in Mathematics.
The class have worked hard to learn about coordinates. In Monday’s lesson we learnt about the X and Y axis on a grid and how to use them to plot coordinates on a grid (we have to walk before we fly!). We discussed what coordinates might be used for in everyday life, such as plane and ship navigation, and mapping.
During Tuesday and Wednesday’s lessons, the children used a series of coordinates to spell their names, plot the vertices of shapes and even identify the triangles and quadrilaterals they had made by plotting these points!
In Thursday and Friday’s lessons the class learnt about translation-how to move a shape (up, down, left and right) with out changing it. We translated each vertices using coordinates to move a shape into a new position on a unit grid and then described the movement using worded sentences.
As a challenge, the class enjoyed a game of ‘battle ships’ by trying to describe the translation of a cube to their partner. Their job was to place the cubes in the identical position that their partner had described.
Well done for working so hard in Mathematics this week Year 4! I am very proud of the progress you have been making and for how enthusiastic you are about the subject!
What are some things you remember from this week’s Maths lessons?
Maths was fun, especially the challenge, it was more like we got to play!
