We have began Year 3 in these first few weeks focusing on place value so the children have the strong foundations they will need when we tackle Maths concepts across the Year 3 curriculum.

Place value involves understanding the value of each digit within numbers up to 1,000. We do this by by learning to partition numbers in different ways; add/subtract and count on in 100s; represent numbers on a number line; and compare/order numbers.

In the pictures below, you’ll see how we use base 10 equipment to represent and compare numbers. Our Power Maths scheme is also great for demonstrating a wide variety of ways of looking at the concept of number and challenging the children to think of numbers in different ways.

We look forward now to moving on to applying our understanding of number to solving addition and subtraction problems!
