This morning, we welcomed lots of parents into school to learn more about how they can support their children with Maths at home.
The most important way to support your child, is through the way we talk about Maths. We want everyone to believe that they can do Maths and so we never say ‘I’m bad at Maths’ or ‘I can’t do it’. Maths is in everything we do, and so we spoke about how we can point out the Maths in our cooking, shopping, taking the bus, playing games and just playing. By dropping it into conversation, little and often, children will regularly practise their mathematical skills without even noticing.
We shared that board games are very helpful in practising addition skills as well as games like Shut the Box for number bonds. We spoke about Maths in sports and how watching a football match can lead to lots of conversations about points and therefore Maths! There is also the need to practise calculations like times tables and so we shared some excellent online resources to help with this.
Parents then had the opportunity to visit different classes around the school to see how Maths is taught at school.
We really enjoyed your visit to our class to watch us in math.
What a great turn out! Thank you to the parents who attended. Maths is so important!
Thank you very much for this open morning and excellent presentation. So many useful tips.
