This afternoon in Science, we were trying to understand the term solubility. We learnt about insoluble and soluble solutions. For a soluble solution, the solute would need to dissolve in the solvent. It was quite tricky vocabulary but the children persevered to understand all the terminology.
To help understand soluble and insoluble solutions we made lava lamps. Straight away the children knew that the oil was not dissolving with the water and Augustin pointed out that this was due to liquid density.
We then learnt that oil and water did not dissolve because of molecular polarity – the oil and water molecules repelled. We had a lot of fun exploring solubility.
Head on over to our blog to find out how to create your own lava lamp using ingredients you may already have in your cupboards at home.
