Belinda, from 3BM, spoke to parents virtually today about how to keep children safer online and gave us some top tips.
The most important thing to remember is to have regular, open conversations with your children, bringing your offline parenting skills to the online world.
We always tell children that they can talk to an adult about anything that happens online. Belinda reminded us of the importance of not overreacting to anything otherwise children will be reluctant to talk to us in the future. You can never start these conversations about what they do on devices too early – as soon as they are using a device (e.g. playing on your phone) you should start the open conversations with them about what they do.
Belinda reminded us of the age restrictions that are there for a reason and shared a helpful website: Common Sense Media. This website has up to date information and advice about a range of games, books, films and website to help you find out more about the things your child likes to do. You can also sign up to get regular updates on the latest games and websites that children are playing.
Some other excellent resources for you as parents and for you to look at with your children:
- BBC Own It – lots of videos for children which are an excellent conversation starter
- Taming Gaming – advice on different games, including reviews on positive games to help promote games that have an educational value
- Internet Matters Parental Controls – very clear instructions for how to set up controls on a range of devices and games
As adults, we need to lead by example, especially with our use of devices. You could set up a family contract that everyone follows that includes a rule of when to turn devices off. Adults and children shouldn’t be on their devices for an hour before they go to bed as the blue light that is emitted affects our sleep.
Just remember to TALK
T – TALK to your child about their online activity. Start the conversation and listen to their concerns
A – AGREE ground rules about the way you use technology as a family
L – LEARN about the platforms and apps your child loves. Take an interest in their online life (Common Sense Media)
K – KNOW how to use tools, apps and settings that can help to keep you child safe onlineĀ (Internet Matters Parental Controls)
