Two weeks ago, Year 6 had the opportunity to meet Cllr Robert Rigby, the Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Westminster, when he visited our school. He told us all about the theme he has chosen for his time as mayor which is to ‘Inspire Activity’ by encouraging children to get more active to improve their physical and mental well-being.
The Lord Mayor then joined Year 6 on the roof to join in with some exercise and to encourage us to think of ways to incorporate the ‘Daily Mile’ into our everyday lives.
We all already take part in two hours of PE per week at school and many of us also take part in active after school activities both in and out of school. Lots of us walk/scoot to school or walk/scoot from the station or bus stop every day. We also have lots and lots and lots of stairs at school which help us to get our daily steps in!
Inspired by our visit from the mayor, we would like to encourage everyone at St. Vincent’s to try to get more exercise every day.
We estimated that everyone does at least half a mile each day by walking up and down all of the stairs and at least some of the way to school. We have measured the playground and done some complicated division calculations to help you plan your other half mile:
A mile is approximately 1600 metres (1.6 kilometres) so half a mile is approximately 800 metres.
The big pitch on the roof playground has a perimeter of 53 metres so if you run or walk around the white line 15 times you have completed approximately half a mile.
The white square in the middle of the big pitch on the roof playground has a perimeter of 25 metres so if you run or walk around the white line 32 times, you have completed approximately half a mile.
The small pitch on the roof playground has a perimeter of 30 metres so if you run or walk around the white line 27 times you have completed approximately half a mile.
Year 6 challenge everyone to try to complete the challenge as often as they can. Let us know how you get on in the comments.
Good luck, everyone! We can’t wait to hear how many people tried the challenge this week.
I really enjoyed running the daily mile with the Lord Mayor! We got to run around the roof playground which was so much fun and kept us healthy.
This is so fun! When can Y4 get a chance to do the Daily Mile?
