Last term we started learning how to play the recorder in Music and this term we are adding Chime bars to our musical instrument repertoire. Today we learned a new song called ‘Colon Man’, a Jamaican reggae/folk song (recorded by Bob Marley’s mum!).

We learned the tune separately and the descant (an additional vocal part above the main melody) separately. In the next Music lesson, we’ll combine the tune and descant. Once we have secured the tune and the decant combined, we can incorporate the recorders to create musical different layers within the song.

We had the opportunity to play the chime bars altogether, in small groups and if we were feeling confident, individually. We are enjoying using songs from other cultures to inspire our musical pieces and help us learn to play different instruments.
