In our PSED lesson this week, we learnt about the characteristics of positive and negative friendships.

Together with their learning partners the children first discussed some friendships that they have and shared what they like about their friends. We the explored how friends should make us feel and there were lots of brilliant ideas: happy, joyful, excited and calm. We then thought about how friends should not make us feel which included: sad, alone, worried and scared. Then we spoke about what we might do if we make one of our friends sad or are unkind to them, which happens from time to time. We learnt that we should say sorry and forgive one another.

For the next part of the lesson, we thought about some behaviours which are positive and negative in friendships. For example, helping a friend if they’re hurt and asking them to play with us are positive things we expect our friends to do but teasing and not sharing with us are things which we would not want our friends to do. We spoke about our special people we could talk to from our previous lesson if we ever felt sad or worried about our friendships.

Later on we learnt that our most important role model, Jesus, gave us a special rule about being friends. He said, “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another”. He told us that we should love our friends and be kind to them! We also talked about our school patron Saint, Saint Vincent de Paul who taught us to help everyone.

Lastly, we discussed some characteristics that we might encounter and decided whether they belonged to the ‘good friend’ or ‘not a good friend’ category.

Well done Reception! What a fantastic lesson where we learnt about how our friends should make us feel, and what makes a good friend!
