This week, we were really lucky to welcome Carol from Kidscape for the Bullying Awareness Champion Training.
For this training, we needed to have a group agreement to ensure that we respected others, listened to others and to show empathy too. We were reminded about speaking to a trusted adult as it is sometimes difficult to share or listen to certain stories.
We learned about the definition of bullying, as the repetitive, intentional hurting of one person or group by another person. We spoke about the fact that this often involves an imbalance of power and can happen both in person, or online. To understand more about the bullying that can occur, we learned about four main types:
- Physical
- Emotional
- Verbal
- Cyberbulling
An important thing for us to discuss was the concept of ‘banter’. We spoke about the fact that banter can actually become bullying behaviour. We know that banter should be with no intention to hurt anybody and all people involved know the limit. Sometimes this can cross the line and become unintentional teasing, which often needs somebody to say sorry. From here, intentional teasing can sometimes sadly occur which is deliberate and can make others feel very upset.
Carol spoke to us about an activity which focused on the impact of words. We know that there are kind words and unkind words. We can think of this in terms of how we think of ourselves, as well as others. Words can have a lasting impact on others and you should always consider what you are saying and how it could affect them.
We learned that 1 in every 4 children have been bullied but spoke about the fact that there are places that we can turn such as a trusted adult or Childline. We learned about what a Bullying Awareness Champion is and how we can continue to develop these skills in order to help others. We know that they are good role models. They listen, are respectful and are fair. To help us with this, we thought about our own skills and qualities and how these will help us with our Champion role.
We would like to thank Carol from Kidscape for our brilliant workshop! We feel much more confident about the ways in which we can support one another as Champions. We are also more aware of our own actions and how these can have lasting impacts.
This looks like a very important workshop. I hope you enjoyed it and learnt a lot.
