On Friday Reception went on a very exciting trip to the Postal Museum!
After we had arrived, we got to it and explored the first exhibition which was all about the history of post and Royal Mail. We saw a coach that people used in the past to send mail to different cities which had to be pulled by horses. We also saw some uniforms that post men had to wear and lots of different stamps with different Kings and Queens on them. There were some very old post boxes from the Victorian times which were green. We learnt that because green was hard to see, they were later painted red to look like they do today.
After lunch we enjoyed playing in the ‘Sorted!’ soft play area. It was so much fun to push the mail trolleys around. There were letters and parcels to deliver, a post office and post van and even a sorting center. We enjoyed sending letters up and down in the pulley, sliding down the slide and talking to one another in the big red London phone boxes.
For our last activity, we took a ride on the Mail Rail! This used to be a real mail rail line that was used to send thousands of letters across London each day. On the train ride we learnt about the history of the Mail Rail and heard about some of the people who worked on it. We learnt a lot about the way letters are carried, sorted and delivered to us.
A huge thank you to the parents who accompanied us on this trip! We really couldn’t have done it without you.
Another big thank you to the SVPA who funded our trip! It was a brilliant learning experience for us all.
What was your favourite part of our trip to the Postal Museum (I liked the Mail Rail the best!)?
