This week in Year 4, the class looked at the events and symbols of Maundy Thursday, the first day of the Easter Triduum when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and the Last Supper.
We learnt that Maundy Thursday is the Thursday of Holy Week, the final week of Lent. It is a solemn time when crucifixes and statues in Church are covered in purple cloth as we wait prepare for the new life of Jesus’ resurrection on Easter Sunday.
During the Mass on Maundy Thursday the Priest wears white vestments to show it is a special celebration of how Jesus gave himself for us.
The Gospel of John (13:4-9, 12-15) is read which recalls how Jesus set an example for us to copy by washing his disciples feet, a job usually done by the lowliest of servants. We spent time thinking about how the disciples must have felt as Jesus washed their feet and how they might have followed his example.
The children enjoyed looking at art work depicting Jesus washing his disciples feet and created their own versions using oil pastels. We displayed these on our prayer table and had a moment of quiet reflection about how we ourselves could use what Jesus taught his disciples to help our families, friends and peers.
How do you think we can follow Jesus’ example of service?
