This half term in Art, we have been studying Roman mosaic art and exploring how the Roman’s created these impressive art pieces all made out of lots of tiny squares to create a pattern. We found out that tessellation is creating a repeated pattern within a design and we looked at some examples of Roman mosaics in which some are still standing today.
Inspiration:
· We looked at an artist called Caroline Jariwala who specialises in using tessellation to create mosaic artwork. She is also inspiring because she only uses recycled materials or materials that would be going to landfill to stop wastage. We also saw how she also represented her Indian culture by displaying this within her mosaics.
Imitate:
· We experimented with tessellation to create an art piece within our sketch books. This involved trying to complete an unfinished half of a mosaic art piece and looking carefully at the patterns and details to make sure it matched.
Innovate:
· We created our own mosaics using glass tiles and putting these onto a wooden frame.
To create our own mosaic art which involved drawing a repeated pattern on a small piece of paper as a draft and then thinking how could we ensure that the pattern was repeated. We then had to think about contrasting colours for our backgrounds so that our designs would stand out. We then started to use PVA glue and small glass tiles to create our mosaics. As you can imagine it was very time consuming but it was worth it as you can see from our impressive art pieces.
Year 4, what did you enjoy about our art lessons this week and what design would you do next?
Hope you had fun year 4! They look really cool!
I loved making the mosaic,it was so fun. I hope we can do it again!!!!
