In Science we are learning about Materials.
We have learnt that materials have different properties. Some objects are hard, soft, opaque, transparent, shiny, rough, smooth or absorbent. In our lessons we have learnt to work scientifically. We have classified different objects according to their properties, as well as learnt to distinguish the difference between object and material.
When conducting experiments we have learnt to record our predictions, the equipment used, the results and importantly how we made it a fair test.
This week we read the story, ‘The Three Little Pigs.’ In the story the big bad wolf could not blow down the brick house. In Year 1 we were given the task of finding out which house would be:
- The most waterproof
- The most stable
We were given different objects and materials to build our own houses. We could make a stick house, a house made from pipe cleaners, a lego brick house, a house made from sugar cubes and a marshmallow and spaghetti house. We then used a fan to test its stability and a water spray to see how waterproof it was. We also learnt lots of problem solving skills along the way too!
The lego brick house was the strongest! It was waterproof and stable. The sugar cube house was very sticky! The sugar house dissolved when we sprayed water on it!
Well done for your excellent learning Year 1!
I hope you had fun!
This looks great fun! Well done Year 1 xx
I loved this science class. Building with sugar cubes and then spraying it with water was such sticky fun! The spaghetti and marshmallow challenge was so much fun too! I even enjoyed building with Lego:-)
