In Art this term, we are learning how to sketch and in this week’s lesson, the children learned 4 different methods for shading: hatching, cross hatching, scribbling and pressure control. Hatching is where you use straight lines to shade; cross hatching is using multiple layers of straight lines to shade; scribbling is where you fill the space in a circular motion; and pressure control is the amount of pressure you place on the paper to create light and dark.
Our topic is Ancient Britain so we after practising the different shading techniques in our sketch books, we took a template of Stonehenge and shaded in shadows if the sun was shining from the right hand side of the picture. We used the different techniques to create different levels of darkness in our shadows.
In our next Art lesson, we’re looking forward to having a go at creating our own sketches of Stonehenge. We’ll have different images of Stonehenge and we’ll use the techniques we learned this week to help us with our sketches.
