To support our current topic of Under the Sea, our classroom has been transformed! The children and teachers have worked hard to create an immersive undersea world in our Nursery. This transformation is in preparation for our upcoming visit to the aquarium, and provided fun visual prompts for our learning throughout the next half term.

As students walk into the classroom, they are greeted by cascading green crepe paper seaweed and shimmering blue waves, creating the illusion of being underwater!

The children had the option to create one of five sea animals: shark, jellyfish, turtle, fish, or crab. Each project was crafted using creative techniques to emphasize texture, material properties, and the unique characteristics of these marine creatures. Here is a breakdown of the activities:

Sharks: The children used sponges to apply dark-colored paint, simulating the rough texture of a shark’s skin. This activity helped them understand the tactile differences between various marine animals.

Jellyfish: Jellyfish were crafted by sponging a translucent base coat and layering it with holographic paper to represent their transparent bodies. Crepe paper was cut into long strips for the jellyfish tentacles, which were designed to flap and move, mirroring the real-life motion of jellyfish in water.

Fish: Bubble wrap was painted with metallic silver and stamped onto paper fish to create textured scales. This method not only captured the slippery, reflective quality of fish but also introduced a discussion about plastic pollution and its impact on marine life.

Crabs: Crabs were sponged with orange paint to mimic their tough exoskeletons and glittered with orange and gold for a shiny finish. Pipe cleaners were added as claws, while neon orange string was used for their legs, offering a tactile element to their design.

Turtles: Green glittered circles were cut in half and attached to paper plates to form flippers and shells. The flippers were stapled, allowing slight movement to mimic a turtle’s swimming motion. This added a dynamic, interactive feature to their creation.

Everyone has worked so hard to transform our classroom, well done Nursery!
