This week, we started our new Religious Education topic ‘Baptism.’ During this topic we will focus on ‘Welcoming.’ To begin our topic, we visited St James’ Church. We met with Father Philip and talked about Baptism and what this means. We asked Father Philip some questions we had thought carefully about together in school.
Who holds the baby?
The Mum or Dad usually holds the baby so they feel comfortable with their family.
How do you Baptise the baby?
Father Philip would take some special Holy Water from the Font and pour this over the baby’s head. Father Philip would say some special words when he does this.
Where is the water?
The water is kept inside something special called a Font.
Why does the water go on the baby?
This is to welcome the baby into God’s family.
After Father Philip answered our questions, he showed us around the Church. We looked at some special areas inside the Church including Our Lady’s Chapel and the Baptistery. We then looked at some statues in the Church including St Anne, Our Lady and Jesus, St Joseph, St Peter and St Luke.
Thank you to Father Philip for helping us with our learning today!
