This week, as part of our Other Faiths topic in Religious Education, we have been studying Sikhism. Class 3 and 4 were lucky enough to visit the Central Gurdwara – a special temple for Sikhs to pray and worship.
As we entered the temple, we took our shoes off and put on a head scarf to show our respect. We sat down in the Darbar Sahib (the large hall) and firstly talked about the Guru Granth Sahib. This is the special Holy book which is read from.
We listened to lots of information about Sikhism and found out about the Five Ks – these are five items that Guru Gobind Singh commanded Sikhs to wear at all times in 1699.
After our time of learning we went downstairs into the Langar, the kitchen where meals are served. Although some Gurudwaras have tables and chairs, as a tradition, worshippers are expected to sit on the floor.
We had a special time at the Gurdwara!
