In Year 4 this week for our Art lessons, we have completed making and painting our paper mache volcanoes to represent one of the Earth’s most interesting wonders.
Firstly, we had to make the base of our volcanoes, which we did in pairs. We started by taping a cardboard tube to the centre of our larger A3 cardboard pieces, and then we scrunched up lots of newspaper to stuff underneath the tape. This allowed the dome shape of the volcano to start to form, which took a lot of patience and teamwork with our learning partners. Then we had to mix PVA glue with water to create our paste and use it to brush onto our ripped newspaper strips. We then started placing these strips of newspaper over the dome shape with the aim of covering all the tape to make a single layer. This would be the outer shell of our volcano, which we had to allow to dry so that it would set and we could paint on it.
A few lessons later, the paper mache volcanoes were now dry, and it was time to paint them. With our primary colours in paint pots, we worked together with our learning partner to paint the volcano. It took a lot more paint than we thought it would, and some of us decided to paint a live eruption and show running lava, which was quite tricky to do.
Year 4, well done on completing your projects. What do you think? What was your favourite part?
