This week, Year 4 went on our first school trip of the year to the wonderful Fulham Palace to see how the Ancient Romans lived when they had settled in Britain. We made our way on public transport over to Fulham Palace (after some typical London Underground delays) and met our educator Alex, who was going to led our session.
Firstly, Alex asked us if we knew what an archaeologist does and she explained that they look at human history periods by looking at physical artefacts. We were even lucky to handle some previous artefacts and passed them around to our classmates so everyone could see. There was a roof tile, a cow bone and some small Roman coins.
We then split into 4 groups and had to study and explore different stations. There was the bathhouse, the veranda and the kitchen . There were different tasks which we had to complete which the Romans all would have done. Our personal favourite was grinding the flour grain with a stone in a bowl which required a lot of hard labour.
Lastly, Alex told us that the emperor was on his way across Putney Bridge and we had to get ready for his arrival by preparing him gifts so he would feel welcome. We got to dress up in wonderful costumes to rightfully play the part. The emperor (our teacher dressed up) arrived and took the time to inspect our gifts to make sure they were good. After our amazing workshop, we had lunch at Fulham Palace before heading back to the tube so we could travel back to school.
Thank you to Alex at Fulham Palace for teaching us and looking after us for our trip.
Thank you to the SVPA for funding this trip and the parent volunteers who supported us on our trip.
Year 4, what was your favourite part of the trip?
I enjoyed most the ball games and making the mosaic.
I enjoyed dressing up in Roman clothing. I also thought the mosaic building was fun. The ancient Roman coins were very interesting to see.
Thank you Mr. Garnet and to all my teachers for organising this trip.
I enjoyed making the mosaic and the cooking activity the most. I liked looking at the different artefacts. I think I saw a bit of blood in the bone.
Thank you to all the teachers for organising this trip.
I enjoyed creating our own mosaics and really loved playing catch with the balls and cooking like a Roman. Also, I saw some coins and it was very interesting.
I wrote a prayer to the Gods.
It was such fun! I loved dressing up as Romans and looking at the roman objects,it was one of the best activities. And don’t forget preparing the food that was also very fun,it was AMAZING!!
