Today Year 4 visited the ancient Roman temple of Mithras at the London Mithraeum as part of our Ancient Rome and Roman Britain topic.
We learnt about how London became a very important town for the Romans, due to its location along the Thames.
We looked at some of the buildings which the Romans built in Londinium such as an ampitheatre, a forum and the ancient temple of Mithras!
The temple is located next to a small river called the Wallbrook which still trickles under the modern city of London today.
Year 4 learnt lots about the site which was discovered after the Blitz destroyed many buildings in London during WWII. The archaeologists nearly gave up on their excavation of the Mithraeum until they discovered the head of Mithras himself and continued to find hundreds to Roman artefacts on the site.
We had a special look at some of the incredible artefacts which were found such as coins, sandals and even the oldest ever inscription of the word London, or Londinium, ever found!
It was very exciting…
The class then had a visual experience of the temple with lights, smoke and an audio which really made us feel like we had travelled back in time to the temple of Mithras. Hearing the prayers and voices of the ancient Romans really brought the site to life!
We spend the rest of our time completing challenges such as writing our names in Roman letters and having a look at how some of the modern artwork in the Mezzazine used the artefacts as inspiration.
Thank you to the London Mithraeum and all of the parents who came to support us on the trip! We could not have done it without you!
What was the most interesting thing you learnt about Roman Londinium today?
l really enjoyed this trip and I was so happy 🥰☺️
We loved going to the museum and hope we can go again. Looking at the temple and artefacts.
The most interesting thing I learned about on the trip was all about the temple. I loved inside the dark, dusty place . I hope we can go back soon.
I loved the trip, from Noah
It was also scary from Juliet
The most interesting thing about the Romans that I found was when we heard the Romans speak Latin.

Dear Mr Kersys,
I really enjoyed going to the Mithraeum Museum it was so much fun! The thing I liked the most was being able to see the temple of God Mithras.
Answer to the question:
The thing I learnt was that people who worshiped their Gods had to past tests to be able to sit closer to the altar. Only soldiers and merchants were allowed to go to the temple. Women were not able to go.
Although I found it very fun and very interesting I did find the temple a bit creepy!

Mythraeum Museum
My favourite thing we did in the Mythraem Museum was when we went into the underground temple.
At the start I thought it was a little creepy, but when the lights came on I felt a bit more relieved.
I liked going around with Louise and Zoe, looking at what we could find out to write on our sheets.
We thought that the Museum was amazing because we really enjoyed the artefacts and the underground temple.
I found the museum very interesting and my favourite part was the head of Mithras and the well.
I thought that it was so amazing to go to the London Mithraeum Museum !
It was wonderful because it was the first time we got to go on public transport in school and the underground temple was incredible. I loved the trip !
But the most interesting thing that I found out about today in the Museum was when me and Heloise and Grace found a candle hole in the temple and listening to Lizzie telling us about London and the temple.
I loved the museum! It was so much fun!
One of the things I learned about Roman Londinium was that The River Thames was just as important in roman times as it is today!
