This week, we were really lucky to have Scarlet and Alba from the National Portrait Gallery come into school to work with us.
We took part in the Faces and Places workshop which aims to explore portraiture, particularly of inspiring people connected to Westminster. We began by looking at a portrait of Lily Cole. We thought about what the portrait might tell us about her, in terms of what she does or what she is passionate about. We noticed themes of nature, the contrast between light and dark and the side-profile view. We had a go at sketching our own portraits by tracing from our chin to the back of our heads.
We then learned more about the ten portraits from Bradley Wiggins to Ada Lovelace and Valerie Ann Amos. We learned a little about their life and achievements and then worked on drawing portraits of our friends. We did this in a clever way that used carbon paper. This meant that we had two of the exact same portraits. We then coloured and decorated our portraits a little more, in a range of creative ways. It was then time to cut these to be able to weave them together. The results were so interesting and they were a great way to experiment with art.
