Year 4 had a brilliant end to the week as we celebrated the Coronation of King Charles III!
To really get into the spirit, everyone came to school dressed in red, white and blue, the colours of the Union Jack!
We began the day with a special assembly where we watched a brilliant video all about the history of the Coronation and it’s significance. We said a prayer for King Charles and sang our National Anthem ‘God Save the King’!
This morning, Year 4 looked at the current coins which feature Queen Elizabeth II and the new coins from the Royal Mint which will be released soon with King Charles’ effigy. We noticed that the King faces in the opposite direction to the late Queen and that Charles is not wearing a crown on the new coins, whereas the Queen wears a diadem.
We then discussed how other countries in the Commonwealth also feature the monarch on their coins and notes such as Canada and Australia. The class then had a go at designing their own coins! One side was an effigy of King Charles and the other could be something related to the United Kingdom or the Coronation.
At lunch time, our whole school gathered on the roof for a special picnic lunch which was so kindly prepared for us. We ate our food just in time as the thunder and rain set in! We had to have dessert in class but jelly and ice cream tastes just as good anywhere!
We spent the rest of the afternoon looking at different portraits of past monarchs such as Henry VIII, George I and Elizabeth II. We thought about why monarchs in the past have portraits and created our own watercolour portraits for King Charles III!
That day was so fun! We got to paint buntings for decorations on the roof and we designed our own coins, also we had a picnic on the roof and the food was delicious. Thank you teachers!
