In Design Technology, Year 6 have been developing their cookery skills.

We started off by recalling all of the cooking that the class had done at school in previous years and also about what we like to cook at home with and for their families.

Next, we learned all about today’s ‘hero ingredient’ which is salmon and how it is sourced. We described how salmon progresses from  ‘Farm to Fork’.

We learned about the importance of health and safety in cooking, including how to avoid cross contamination and what a balanced diet involves.

With our learning partners, we then created  our recipe using these ingredients: salmon fillets, new potatoes, red peppers, onions, lemons, olive oil, salt, pepper and rocket. We had to decide how we wanted to prepare our potatoes, and whether we were roasting the lemons, peppers and onions, steaming them in with the salmon or serving them as a raw salad.
We had lots of opportunities to practice the learning power of ‘Reciprocity’ and all of the pairs were able to work together harmoniously, helping each other as well as compromising when necessary.

We had a great time preparing all of the food ourselves, taking care to follow the recipe sensibly and safely. We also loved eating what we had prepared and we certainly didn’t need an after school snack afterwards!

We were all really pleased with how our meals turned out and hopefully will be able to use our cooking skills at home in the future.
