Today, Year 4 were very lucky to start off this week with an exciting trip to the fantastic National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.

We started off our day by using the Elizabeth line and DLR to travel over to Greenwich and a short walk to the museum. On our arrival, we were greeted by the amazing Rebecca who was going to our educator for our workshop: Polar Explorers. We have been looking at Shackleton’s Journey in English so we knew all about exploring to the South Pole and the struggles that explorers may come into.

Rebecca walked us through the gallery to a classroom which would be our base for most of the session. We were split into groups whilst Rebecca introduced all about the different explorers who have been to the North and South Pole. Rebecca explained that there are a group of people who have always lived in these areas who are known as indigenous people. She told us about the Inuit community who have lived in these regions for centuries and how they have adapted to live in this conditions. Rebecca then gave us our task which was to use the gallery to find information so we could plan our own expedition in Antarctica. We were split into different topics; leisure, food, travel, clothing and shelter and had to walk around the gallery to gain information before making a decision on what to bring on the expedition. We then had to explain to the rest of the class our reasoning before Rebecca let us see some replicas that polar explorers would use. There were snow sandals, pemmican (dried meat) and some equipment used to build a igloo and a tent. We even got to handle them!

We then headed for our lunch as we will very hungry by then and even got some time to have a play in the Hands Up Interactive Gallery. They had some really interesting interactive things that kept us busy for ages!

Thank you to the SVPA for funding our trip and the brilliant parent volunteers for helping us on our trip. We had a brilliant day at the National Maritime Museum!

Year 4 what was your favourite part of the trip?
